FOUNDER MESSAGE

ACADEMY OVERVIEW

The narrative in the media and in society presents Black men as in crisis or on the verge of extinction. Statistics in news reports and research point to the high rates of incarceration, unemployment, poverty, and school dropout. While these data are real and illuminate the disparities and social problems that exist, it is not the full story of the Black community.

Black men are and get to be more than just negative trends and statistics. Conversely little is known and shared about the Black men who are achieving and maximizing their potential despite the unfavorable factors and systems that are in place to keep them down.

Even less is known about how these high-achieving men navigate the world around them and how their mindsets and ways of interacting allow them to be the men they want to be.

That is why the Raising Black Men Academy (RBMA) exist. Guided by the tenants of transformation, identity, intimacy and integrity, the RBMA is a 4-week program thoughtfully designed to expose young Black men between the ages of 18-25 to the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary to live, lead and succeed.

Through this intensive, transformational program RBMA Scholars are guided to set priorities and develop a laser-beam focus on their goals and success through:

● learning effective ways of managing their thoughts  and emotions
● a deeper reflection and understanding of themselves and habits of mind
● learning to make responsible, strategic and impactful choices
● establishing and maintaining positive relationships

WHO IS THE RBMA SCHOLAR?

We refer to RBMA participants as Scholars because while enrolled, they become deep learners and thinkers about issues most critical to their lives and paths.

RBMA scholars are all between ages 18-25, self-identify as Black and come from a range of social, familial, economic and educational backgrounds. Regardless of their starting place, each RBMA Scholar enters the program prepared to become a C.E.O. man.

SCHEDULE & STRUCTURE

The RBMA is offered in a hybrid format meaning that we meet both live in person and virtually. There are opening and closing celebrations that occur (in person) at the start and end of the Academy. The remaining middle/core program will take place as daily Zoom (web-conferencing) sessions that occur twice daily, Monday through Thursday.

Opening Celebration

We will review the expectations for the Academy and distribute the Scholar packages. You will meet your cohort members, mentors, and the lead facilitators. We will start to create community and trust through dialogue and discussion.

Knowledge Set #1

Social-Emotional growth serves as a stepping stone to the RBMA. It is an intense but transformative exploration of who you are, your beliefs about yourself, and provides time for guided reflection on your behaviors and maintain positive relationships as a Black man.

Knowledge Set #2

You create a clear sense of your goals, and how you will strategize to get there through the active pursuit of opportunities and self-advocacy. Scholars will become conversant in ‘Leadership Linguistics’ that are affirming and promoting a growth mindset and leadership values.

Knowledge Set #3

This theme of study offers the space to explore how money drives you. Carrying over from the previous week of goal setting you will participate in real discussions and activities that help you to reprogram a ‘scarcity mentality’ around wealth and shift to a positive money mindset.

Closing Celebration

The formally end the Academy but not your growth as a Scholar. We will reflect on your growth, explore your way forward with your mentor and presentations of your wellness plan to keep you motivated and focused on your vision for success.

WHAT'S EXPECTED OF SCHOLARS?

The RBMA is a success when you are committed to your success.
Therefore, Scholars are asked to put their efforts and energy into the growth process.

SCHOLARS COMMIT TO:

Attend all virtual meetings, opening and closing celebrations.

Prepare for the sessions by doing any light reading or viewing the films, if required.

Keep a record of your RBMA journal entries for each week of the program.

Meet weekly with your mentor 1-to-1 during the Academy and regularly beyond.

Be a trustworthy and respectful brother to your fellow cohort members, mentors, special guests and facilitator.

Having fun.
